Berjou, August 1944

August 1944, and the Noireau valley was in the throes of battle.

British troops were preparing to liberate the commune of Berjou.

To do this, the British soldiers took an arduous route that took the German soldiers by surprise. On this same route, you can relive the liberation step by step, thanks to the 6 desks set up along the way.

As you will have realised, you need to be in good physical condition to take this route, which can be described as “uphill” all the way to Berjou. You’ll cross the Berjou woods and return via a new loop.

You can have a picnic in Berjou (picnic table) opposite the bakery (open Tuesday to Sunday lunchtimes).

We recommend that you climb the hill on a Sunday and continue your visit by visiting the newly renovated Berjou Liberation Museum, which recounts the battle through collections and anecdotes.
